Student Visa and Insurance
Apply for a long-term visa (X1) for studies over 6 months. For programs under 6 months, apply for a short-term visa (X2). Health insurance is strictly mandatory, usually costing CNY 800 per year, and must be purchased from Chinese providers upon arrival.
Part-Time Work and Internships
International students in China are generally prohibited from part-time work. By default, your standard student visa (X1 or X2) does not permit general employment. However, you may be able to work part-time through approved on-campus work-study positions (勤工助学) or off-campus internships. Some universities also offer internship programs with stipends.
Accommodation
On-Campus accommodation: Many students choose to live in a dormitory because of the reasonable price, well-equipped facilities, and security, and close proximity to the campus.
Off-campus Accommodation: Students who want to live in off-campus residence can find information in English via the internet or by contacting real estate agents that can easily be found in China. Off-campus accommodation costs vary significantly by city and location.

Universities in China run on a strict two-semester system. The primary intake is the Autumn Semester (early September to January). The Spring semester (late February to July) is typically reserved for short-term exchange students.
Technically true. Chinese campuses are much more regulated than Western universities. Western universities generally leave housing, lifestyle choices, and personal time completely up to students. Chinese universities, by contrast, act as close guardians, implementing strict campus access controls, mandatory on-campus housing rules, and structured daily schedules to maintain safety and order.
Not really, many institutions offer full degrees taught entirely in English. However, you will still need to complete mandatory conversational Mandarin modules as part of your graduation requirement.
China is a cashless society. Everything runs through two apps: WeChat (微信) and Alipay (支付宝). You will link your local Chinese bank account to these apps immediately upon arrival.
Yes! Universities often have a dedicated, fully certified Muslim canteen on campus. Outside of campus, look for the characters 清真 (Qīng Zhēn), which mean “Halal” in the restaurant signboard.
No. Under Chinese law, there is a strict separation of education and religion. Universities are legally forbidden from hosting or constructing any religious spaces. However, you are completely free to pray inside your own dormitory room or within private living spaces.
